Kikuyu Grass Blend

About Kikuyu Grass

Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) is a vigorous, warm-season perennial grass known for its fast growth and lush green appearance. Native to East Africa, it thrives in Australia's climate and is one of the most popular turf choices for high-traffic areas. This blend is often used in hydroseeding and hydromulching projects due to its rapid establishment, resilience, and ability to cover large areas quickly.

Best Uses & Applications

Kikuyu is ideal for:

  • Residential lawns

  • Parks and recreational grounds

  • Roadside verges

  • Erosion control zones

  • Paddocks and acreage

  • Sporting fields and racetracks

Thanks to its dense growth and quick spreading, Kikuyu forms a thick mat of turf that helps suppress weeds and stabilise the soil, making it an excellent option for both rural and urban projects.

Growth Time & Establishment

Kikuyu is one of the fastest-growing grass types available.

  • Germination: 7–14 days (under ideal conditions)

  • Full establishment: 6–8 weeks
It responds well to hydroseeding and hydromulching, especially when paired with the right mulch and fertiliser mix to retain moisture and encourage early root development.

Best Time to Hydroseed Kikuyu

Kikuyu performs best when sown in spring through to early autumn, while soil temperatures are warm (above 18°C). This encourages strong germination and rapid early growth, reducing competition from weeds and allowing the grass to establish before cooler months.

Best Locations & Soil Types

Kikuyu is incredibly adaptable and performs well in:

  • Full sun (not ideal for heavy shade)

  • Loamy, sandy, or clay soils (provided drainage is adequate)

  • Moderate to high fertility soils

It’s drought-tolerant once established but will thrive with occasional watering in dry periods.

Aftercare Tips

To support a healthy, long-lasting Kikuyu lawn or pasture, follow these care tips:

  • Watering: Keep moist during germination. Water regularly in the first 4–6 weeks, then reduce as the grass establishes.

  • Mowing: Begin mowing once the grass reaches 5–7cm in height to encourage lateral growth. Maintain at 3–5cm height.

  • Fertilising: Use a balanced fertiliser 4–6 weeks after seeding and again every 6–8 weeks in the growing season.

  • Weed Management: Keep an eye on weed growth early and use pre/post-emergent treatments if necessary.

  • Aeration: Aerate the soil annually to reduce compaction and improve water/nutrient uptake.
