Ryegrass Blend
About Ryegrass
Ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is a cool-season, fast-establishing grass variety prized for its lush green colour, dense coverage, and quick germination. It is often used for short-to-medium-term coverage or as a seasonal solution in areas that require fast results. Ryegrass is widely used across rural, civil, and residential projects for erosion control, pasture enhancement, and soil stabilisation—making it a great option in hydroseeding or hydromulching applications.
Best Uses & Applications
Ryegrass is a great fit for:
Quick erosion control
Civil construction sites requiring temporary cover
Residential lawns and turf oversowing
Rural paddocks or pasture top-ups
Roadside rehabilitation and drainage line revegetation
Its rapid growth and adaptability make it a go-to option for short-term or seasonal use, and it is commonly blended with other species for multi-season coverage.
Growth Time & Establishment
Ryegrass is one of the fastest germinating grass species:
Germination: 5–10 days
Full establishment: 4–6 weeks
Ryegrass thrives in moist, cool soil and is known for establishing quickly even in less-than-ideal conditions, making it perfect for erosion-sensitive or high-traffic sites.
Best Time to Hydroseed Ryegrass
Ryegrass performs best when hydroseeded in autumn or early spring, when soil temperatures are between 10°C–20°C. These cooler conditions allow for optimal germination and establishment before extreme weather sets in.
Best Locations & Soil Types
Ryegrass is adaptable but performs best in:
Cooler climates
Moist, well-drained soils (but tolerates heavier clay-based soils with good preparation)
Areas needing fast green-up or temporary cover
Part-shade to full sun exposure
It’s not drought-tolerant long term but provides a lush cover quickly, which can be supported with proper irrigation or combined with other grass species for longer-term solutions.
Aftercare Tips
To get the best results from Ryegrass:
Watering: Maintain consistent moisture during early stages. Water daily during germination and reduce frequency as it establishes.
Mowing: Start mowing when the grass reaches around 7–8cm, keeping it trimmed to around 4–5cm.
Fertilising: Apply a nitrogen-rich fertiliser 4–6 weeks after germination and repeat as needed to keep the grass lush.
Weed Control: Apply pre-emergent or post-emergent herbicides as required based on site conditions.
Overseeding: Ryegrass can be used to overseed warm-season grasses in winter for a vibrant green cover.
